The XM5s are compatible with nearly all audio standards, something that less expensive earbuds do not offer.
2023 has arrived and left. This year saw the release of a number of Truly Wireless Stereo (TWS) earbuds. A excellent set of TWS earbuds may be found for any budget. Having had the good fortune to test numerous of these, I have arrived to a single conclusion.
The Sony WF-1000XM5s were the best I've used this year. Although they are not inexpensive, they excel at what they do best—that is, producing high-quality sound and superior active noise cancellation.
They fit better than ever and are now smaller. They are the winners just based on those two. Active noise cancellation (ANC) technology has long been a lead for Sony, but Bose is quickly catching up.
Even though there is a lot of competition these days, the WF-1000XM5 earbuds still beat the others.
reduced imprint
The XM5s, as they will be called from now on, are 25% smaller than the XM4s, which were their predecessors. Plus, they weigh 20% less. The XM5 buds are smaller in size overall and weigh only 6 grams each. Additionally, the charging case is ten to fifteen percent smaller.
Aside from their smaller footprint, the XM5s get wireless charging capability, an essential feature. I've spoken to a few people who experienced problems with the XM4s. They were somewhat excessively large. Even so, I cautioned them to try them on in a store before making a purchase. Many customers would not be able to wear the size. Sony changed the design after carefully considering the feedback. For my ears and many others, the XM5s fit much better. It's a big relief that the XM5s are no longer noticeable.
They don't slip out even though the TWS earbuds don't have the tightest seal. For people with tiny ears, Sony has included a fourth set of hearts (instead of the three from last year). Advanced polyurethane foam is used to make the ear tips. The IPX4 splash-proof and sweat-resistant classification is still retained by the XM5.
Review of the Sony WF-1000XM5: Easily the Best TWS Earbuds I've Tried in 2023 |
Features & Sound Quality
The XM5s have been my go-to TWS earbuds for the past several months when I first got my hands on them. I've been using these earphones when driving my daily car, traveling domestically, and riding in taxis with the incessant sound of traffic in Delhi. The ANC did not let us down for a single moment. It may not be the greatest in the industry anymore, but it still performs admirably.
The Speak-to-Chat function, which triggers the music when you initiate a conversation, is still present in the XM5s, and it functions as promised. Moreover, there is a transparency setting (here referred to as ambient mode). You can choose how much ambient sound to let in by using the ambient mode. Additionally, multipoint Bluetooth connectivity is available, which is expected given the pricing range. You may easily switch between two devices that are connected to the headphones at the same time thanks to multipoint.
You can use only one earbud if that's how you prefer, just like with the XM4. When you remove an earphone, ear-detection sensors cause the audio to automatically cease. The XM5s features head-tracking and spatial audio, which is a new feature. This functionality is currently only available to Android users. Although it appears exceedingly doubtful, Sony has not verified if Apple users—those who own iPhones—will receive it.
A new gesture control for phone calls is also available. A call can be answered or ended with a simple nod of the head. This will probably also apply to playing and pausing music in the future.
The XM5s are compatible with nearly all audio standards, something that less expensive earbuds do not offer. Compatibility with the Sony LDAC audio codec (for streaming high-resolution audio tracks from Tidal, Amazon Music, etc.) and the new LE Audio standard are among the features.
A ability to "find my buds" is the only thing lacking from this. It's not a deal breaker, though.
Excellent audio quality
Each earbud of the XM5s has a new 8.4mm driver, as opposed to the XM4s' 6mm drivers. Sony claims that this results in superior lower bass range and tonal accuracy. The redesigned drivers make the bass more distinct making the XM5 sound cleaner than ever right out of the box, particularly in the vocals. In essence, the earphones have a more accurate sound.
The closest it comes to sounding like you're at a concert is every year. Greater instrument separation and a more expansive soundstage are present. The XM5s have a rich, deep sound that is large and booming. These headphones will brighten the space around you, whether you're listening to Take Five by Dave Brubeck, The Scientist by Coldplay, or even the well-known Bollywood song Chaiyya Chaiyya. Wearing these buds will immerse you like nothing else.
You have a winner on your hands when you combine it with their excellent active noise cancellation, which is provided by the new V2 Integrated Processor and QN2e Noise-cancelling Processor. In addition to the improved drivers, each XM5 bud contains three microphones. In the race for the greatest noise-cancelling technology, Sony and Bose square off. With both, you cannot go wrong.
Adaptive noise cancelling is another great feature of the XM5s.
Durability of earbuds
One area where the XM5s and XM4s are not better than one other is battery life. With ANC enabled, you still receive eight hours of playback on a single battery. If you switch off the ANC, you can prolong it to 12 hours. If you include the case, the battery will last for 24 hours. In the world of TWS earphones, it doesn't really matter if they are quicker at quick charging.
This device has a fairly good battery life, therefore no complaints should be made.
Conclusion: 2023's Best TWS Earphones
Indeed. That is all. That summarizes the review. The XM5s have the ability to hold their heads high. The earbuds have a smaller footprint, superior drivers, excellent ANC technology, and more. All of this helps to explain why these are the greatest TWS earphones for 2023.
The most important thing to note is that these earbuds are more comfy than before. That alone makes these recommendations simple. One may now take calls for hours on end without worrying about whether the person on the other end can hear you thanks to improvements made to the ANC and sound quality. Compared to most of the competition, battery life is superior.
There are flaws in the XM5s. To their credit, Sony has made intriguing improvements to the premium earbuds' performance that make them worthy of an upgrade. notably decreasing the earphones' size without sacrificing sound quality? Every day of the week, I'll take that!
Sony has excellent competition from Bose and Sennheiser, but in my opinion, Sony will emerge victorious in 2023. The XM5s deliver as promised. If money is no object, I will still rank them as my first option even if they fall short of the competition by a wide margin.
